The first time I went to Ebay, it was in search of a record I'd had as a child called "The Wobblin' Goblin". I tried to register with the username "wobblin" but, to my surprise, it was (or was said to be) taken. For some reason it then occurred to me to add an 'i', and register as wobblini. Since that time, I've used wobblini as a server name and as a username on other sites. I'm not very into the nick and alias culture, but when you have a name that's as common as mine is, especially when you try to make a nick like "dblack" or "davidb" out of it, having a coined name available makes things easier.
